You’ll have to get into college first, but UC Berkeley is currently offering a course on learning video games.
Keep smoking that combo? Not sure who you should choose as your main character? You have no idea what Roma Cancellation is? Don’t worry, all you have to do is enroll in Berkeley’s Art of Fighting Game course, which is a real college course that’s actually worth a few units. The course is part of Berkeley’s DeCal series, which the university describes as “legitimate college courses taught by students.” So, no, unfortunately no tenured professor is going to think “screw it, I want to teach the next generation how to play Street Fighter,” but it’s still incredible that this is something you can do that actually can counts as degree.

As stated on the course page, “In this course, our goal is to help beginners reach an intermediate level with the help of guidance, thus providing the smoothest introduction to the world of fighting games. This course is designed to be an introduction to “fighting games, for players.” People who have less than 100 hours of gaming in this genre. Additionally, we’ll explore beyond the games themselves and spend some time focusing on fighting game communities, history, and impact on Japanese culture. ”
This does sound like a very comprehensive course, as the wider FGC culture is as important as the game itself. Honestly, if I hadn’t completed a stifling degree and lived in the US, I would have taken it myself, so can someone make my dream come true for me? The description also states that you don’t need any experience, which is good to know for beginners.
Considering Tekken 8 is launching next week, now seems like a good time to sign up; but be aware that if you’re one of the small percentage of people reading this who actually attend Berkeley, you can only do so on January 24 Register before the date, so register as soon as possible.
