Hellraiser 2 When you think of “live service games,” this is probably not the game that comes to mind. There are a lot of factors that contribute to this perception, and it’s one of the things that makes this game stand out from the sea of unwanted live service projects, especially the two big projects it comes with.
Whether it’s the modest retail price (by comparison), the lack of exploitative or egregious microtransactions, or the fact that the game is complete and (barring server issues) quite polished and functional at launch; this co-op shooter succeeds Put one foot in live service and the other in classic multiplayer.
This all makes veterans of the original game very excited, knowing that given time, Helldivers 2 can get bigger and better.

Helldiver 2 operates with the same confidence as its predecessor. This is one of those rare sequels that manages to change up the genre and camera perspective while not only keeping the original formula intact, but using the new perspective to mine even more ways to enhance the original experience that made it what it was.
But the shift also means there’s quite a bit of history to draw on. It may have the number 2 in the title, but this is really more of a reboot. That’s why, for all the content we can play today, there’s a lot in Helldiver 2 from the first game that’s yet to be found. And, considering the sequel’s popularity, millions of new players will certainly have a lot to look forward to.
I played a fair amount of the original Hellraiser, but it wasn’t until I read this Reddit post that I remembered how much the sequel skipped over.
The most obvious one? The third faction! The original game launched with three factions, two of which have already appeared in Helldivers 2; so where is the light?
If you’re not familiar, the Illuminati were the third faction originally assembled by the intrepid Helldivers, alongside the Terminators and Cyborgs. The Illuminator is your Eldar/Protoss space race, with super cognitive abilities and unconventional weaponry. Basically, it’s a weird, psychedelic sect of science fiction that’s a staple of this style of science fiction.
Helldivers 2 doesn’t directly reference Illuminate; there’s no mention of a third faction anywhere in the game, and the map only shows the two factions we’re currently fighting. But look at the edges and you can start to see the seeds being planted. If you stay on the ship long enough, you might see news clips covering the ongoing conflict.Look closely and you’ll notice there’s a reference to “Illumination” Do
So far, they’ve been limited to a news scroll bar at the bottom of the screen. And, in typical propaganda fashion, reports of their sightings were downplayed as the ravings of dissidents. Developer Arrowhead Games has always said it has ambitious plans for future content, and has already teased the return of vehicles – another feature that won’t be a jump from the original.
A third faction would be a big deal for Helldivers 2, so it might be further down the road. We might actually get some jump goals earlier that weren’t implemented in the original game. One in particular was tasked with locating and defuse unexploded bombs buried underground.
Affectionately known as the Minesweeper Target, it’s probably the most difficult and disaster-prone target in the original game. In this game, you are given a metal detector and the goal is to capture every dud in an area. This process relies on the same strategic mechanism of hurriedly typing commands as you go. If you enter the wrong code, you will crash. If you miss a mine and trigger it by mistake, you and everyone around you will explode. Of course, all of this has to happen while the enemy is attacking, so it’s nearly impossible to do alone.
The original Helldivers relied more on player interdependence. Some vehicles require one player to drive and another to control the turret, but boss battles also require a cooperative spirit. Yes, these are named bosses that take a while to defeat and challenge an entire squad of Helldivers. I’d really like to see how the sequel handles boss battles, especially if some of the combat mechanics – which work so well in a top-down perspective – translate to third-person.
All of this is to say nothing of the missing strategy, weapons – especially the laser-powered variety, and even higher difficulty levels. The game has a long tail just by bringing back elements from the original that didn’t make the transition, let alone any other original content that might be in the title.
Helldivers 2 just had its most solid weekend yet, despite the game setting another concurrent player record on Steam. Arrowhead anticipated this spike and increased server capacity in preparation – and it worked! Now the developers seem to have found a way to satisfy players’ needs with an effortless distraction Update and expand the game – Start with everything that didn’t make the cut initially.
