Game News Want to replay the very first Resident Evil? Good news, it’s now available on this download platform!
Thanks to GOG, the Resident Evil saga is experiencing a renaissance. These survival horror classics return to PC in their original version from the 90s, enough to relive your childhood nightm ares.
A welcome return
All gamers remember the (for some) traumatic introductory scene of Resident Evil, released on PlayStation 1 in 1996. This iconic survival horror game was ported to Saturn and PC in 1997. These versions are hard to come by these days, so Capcom made the right decision by making the game available on our beloved latest generation PCs.
The game is reborn on GOG, without DRM! When you buy a DRM-free game, it is yours, without the publisher being able to revoke your access to the title. And the arrival of Resident Evil from 1996 on PC will therefore not include DRM. The release of this port had already been leaked, thanks to Gematsu, who noticed that the game had received a PEGI classification for PC. Now it’s official, you can get the original Resident Evil from 1996 on your PC for 10 dollars via the GOG sales platform.
Capcom worked with GOG to adapt this 25-year-old version to its full potential. This port is available in 4 localizations (French, English, German and Japanese). Especially since it has features to improve the player’s visual comfort, such as antialiasing or windowed mode. The icing on the cake: current controllers are supported by the game.
Finally a collection
Nobody saw it coming! On the GOG website, it is possible to purchase the first game individually, but a bundle is already available for $24.99. This includes the first three games, released in 1996, 1998 and 1999. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis are not yet available through this all-game bundle, but in the description we can read the following mention: “Resident Evil 2 and 3 will be added to your library with the purchase of the bundle containing all three games and will be available upon release. Both titles are expected to be released by 2024.”
Finally, the return of this classic that shaped the survival horror genre: Capcom has produced a video in collaboration with YouTuber The Sphere Hunter with the aim of introducing newcomers to the history of this world-famous franchise. Especially since some GOG developers were interviewed about the produced ports, the video is available here.
