When is the release?
It was already clear beforehand that the next major expansion for Warhammer 3 should appear in April. Now the team has confirmed a release date for the Chaos Dwarves: On April 13, 2023 the time has come.
What’s in the expansion?
Like many other factions before them, the Chaos Dwarves are a complete racepack for Total War: Warhammer 3. So no new commanders for Chaos, such as Valkia, Festus, Azazel and Vilitch recently. Instead, they get their own starting points on the map, their own game mechanics, and most importantly their own, rather perverted, unit roster.
These are the innovations that come into play with the purchase of the Chaos Dwarves:
Three legendary commanders
The Chaos Dwarves use three legendary commanders right at the release, between which you can choose at the beginning of a new game. While each commander draws on Chaos Dwarf units, some have special abilities.
- Astragoth Eisenhand: This journeyman is considered the most powerful magician among the chaos dwarves, which in itself makes a difference to the anti-magic dwarves of the main game. In addition to magic, Astragoth also relies on a magical mech suit in battle.
- Drazhoath the Ashene: This dwarf is considered to be the most powerful demon smith among the chaos dwarves, but was actually banished by them into exile. Will that stop him and his Legion of Azgorh? Unlikely.
- Zhatan the Black: Zhatan is a brilliant commander and above all a fearsome warrior. It is said that he directs so many campaigns that the demon forges can hardly keep up with crafting new weapons.
New victory mechanic
The Chaos Dwarves seek to harvest the blood of their god Hashut for untold power. To do this, they build the Hashut’s Great Drill, which not only drills through the ground, but straight through reality.
In order to create this drill, they need relics of the original dwarves, who are said to be their worst enemies. Because the contamination of valuable artefacts, logically, they only like to see so mediocre.
How this victory mechanic works in detail is still unclear. But it could be the unique victory condition for the Empire of Chaos campaign.
New units
Unlike the normal dwarves, the chaos dwarves are not averse to magic or demons. On the contrary: They even combine these things with their previous talent for forging brutal war machines.
The result is truly horrific. In addition to mutated dwarfs in thick armour, the faction also brings hellish equipment into battle. These include friendly-sounding constructs like the Magma Cannon, Skull Cleaver, and Direquake Mortar.
Monsters can also be found in the ranks of the chaos dwarves. For example, bull centaurs or k’daai fireborn. Even hobgoblins use the dwarves as meat shields. But some of them can rise, as did the legendary hero Gorduz Spinebreaker, who you can also recruit and command in the DLC.
New campaign mechanics
The Chaos Dwarfs should play completely independently on the turn-based campaign map. To ensure this, they are given four unique mechanics:
- The Chaos Dwarves can unlock combat bonuses by investing in their infernal forges turn special plans into reality.
- The Tower of Zhar offers all Chaos Dwarf factions the chance to earn political seats and unlock promotions that grant faction rewards. The struggle for seats and districts in the tower should also offer great potential for political dodges and even play a role in multiplayer.
- convoys work similarly to the caravans from Cathay – only the chaos dwarves trade in war tools. This way they can improve their economy.
- It is also good for the economy Subjugation and organization of labor force, to keep the forges running. This works best by winning battles.
We still have to find out in the practical test whether everything is really unique and, above all, fun.
What does this cost?
The DLC will be released for all versions of Warhammer 3, i.e. in addition to Steam and Epic also for the Windows Store, so that Game Pass subscribers can also buy the Chaos Dwarves. In all cases you have to pay 25 dollars for it.
This makes the Chaoszwerge the most expensive race pack ever. Those who pre-order the DLC currently save at least 10 percent. However, we generally advise against pre-ordering games or DLCs. At least as long as there are no tests.
Is there anything for free?
Yes! Alongside Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs, Warhammer 3 Update 3.0 will also be released on the same day, introducing a new legendary heroine. This goes by the name of Ulrika Magdowa and is available to both the Empire and Kislev. Particularly exciting: Ulrika is actually a vampire and can accordingly deal violently in close combat and cast shadow magic.
