Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2 is already one of the most popular games on Steam, even though it hasn’t actually been released yet.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marines 2 has been announced. Technically, that’s true, as you can play the action game right now. The official release date isn’t until September 9, but like many of today’s big games, paying more upfront will unlock the game a few days early.

In this case, buying the Gold or Ultra Edition of Space Marine 2 will give you early access to the game, as thousands of players have already done.

As a result of this excitement (and all the money spent on the expensive edition), Space Marine 2 has quickly climbed the Steam charts for most popular games. The game recently shot to the top of the Valve platform’s sales charts (where it still sits), so it’s almost impossible for this game’s release to not be well received.

When servers went live just over 12 hours ago, Starfighter 2 was sitting at 134,302 concurrent players on Steam, easily ranking among the top 10 most popular games on Steam. As of this writing, over 75,000 players are playing the game. Given the nature of the game, there’s a good chance that positive word of mouth will push these numbers even higher over the weekend, not to mention the boost the game will receive once it officially launches on Tuesday.

A cursory look at the Steam reviews for Starfighter 2 (mostly positive so far) shows no signs of major server issues. While an internet connection is not required to play, much of the game, including the campaign, is designed for cooperative play. PvE modes, operations, and competitive multiplayer are also available after completing the main story.

Warhammer fans in particular will be pleased with the way the series’ lore and fiction are presented in the game, with developer Saber Interactive going to great lengths to ensure the game is as accurate and respectful to the original works as possible.

Starfighter 2 has also impressed most critics, with our own Connor Makar giving it four stars in his iGamesNews review, calling it one of the most faithful Warhammer adaptations ever made. It seems everyone is happy, which is great, as this is also the week the game was shut down less than two weeks after its release.
