Few filmmakers arouse as much praise and reverence among the public as David Fincher and the truth is that there are reasons for this. There are more than 35 years of career for an artist who has offered us material of the caliber of Seven, Lost o The Gamebut who was about to address a very different proposal.
And as has been revealed in VarietyFincher was one of the options that Warner Bros. considered for bring the Harry Potter stories to the big screen. However, the producer immediately rejected it and, based on their words, we can get an idea of why:
“They asked me to talk about how I would Harry Potter. I remember saying, 'I just don't want to do the clean Hollywood version. I want to do something that is much more like Withnail and Iand I want it to be something a little creepy,” explains the director, which did not fit with the company's vision.
The project Fincher is referring to is a 1987 black comedy, which is based on the life of its director and screenwriter, Bruce Robinson, in the late 1960s. And just as we saw on screen in 2001 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stonethe tone is much closer to what JK Rowling's own books are; youthful adventures without fanfare, so “they said: ‘We want Thom Browne's school days in the style of Oliver‘”.
Finally, it was Christopher Columbus who had the honor of directing the project and the box office figures completely supported Warner Bros.' decision. Of course, it would have been very interesting to discover exactly what Fincher's approach was on the big screen.
