Combined Steam player counts for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 have dropped to a 24-hour peak of 87,000, and as Season 2 approaches, parts of the playerbase are concerned about the future of the game.

This information comes from the Steam graph, and while it’s by no means a specific word on the game’s total player base, it does provide some insight into how the game is doing. The game received a lot of criticism both in Warzone and in the multiplayer mode, leaving many people disappointed with the game.

Taking a quick look at Warzone Reddit, folks are sharing their thoughts on the current state of the game, and whether the numbers indicate a rough patch for the game. “That’s what happens when you make a broken game and don’t fix it,” wrote Freddiewop, while others pointed to the game’s lack of content or balance patches.

It’s not all one-sided, though. Some have rightly pointed out that Steam is only one part of the overall gamer base. There are still some folks firing up the Battle.net launcher to get some Warzone time, and let’s not forget about the huge communities on PlayStation and Xbox.

Also, while the roughly 80,000 players are down from the 400,000 at the game’s launch, it’s worth noting that this is the tail end of a lengthy first season. Not only that, but this season has been largely disliked by a considerable number of players. This is obviously bad news, but not entirely unexpected.

Even some of the most popular gamers have considered other FPS titles. TimtheTatMan, one of the biggest FPS influencers and streamers, recently decided to give it a try after comparing Call of Duty Mobile to Warzone 2 content.

So will Season 2 of Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 save the game? Well, some new content in Warzone has been welcomed by enthusiastic diehards who aren’t happy with the drastic changes to the new game. As for Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer… some new maps and weapons are in the works. Not enough to tide people over, but perhaps enough to keep most of the community content for now with a balance patch.
