We are already in the middle of 2023, but the effects of one of the big hits of 2022 are still being felt. Vampire Survivors became the absolute revelation of last year with a formula as simple as it is effective that has recently received its first DLC.
Luca Galante, creator of the work, has been interviewed by IGN and has ensured that the popularity of the title is “as unexpected throughout all these months as it was at the beginning.” In fact, he has managed to be nominated for The Game Awards 2022which is a total recognition.
“Though it’s very hard for me to believe that [Vampire Survivors] deserves all this attention, I’m glad it gets it, especially since it shows that literally anyone could do it, and thus I hope it will encourage more independent developers to continue with their projects. I’m not saying it out of ‘my good heart’, but out of selfishness: I want to see more and more Celestes, Undertales, Powerwash Simulators, Wandersongs and Short Hikes getting the limelight they deserve!”
However, there is a question that even Galante cannot answer: why Vampire Survivors has liked so much. Of course, he believes that there are certain keys when talking about the rise of the game.
“I have no idea, which is really scary! Since launch, I’ve tried not to look at the numbers or what’s happening on the internet, specifically not to get too carried away, I’ve kept my head down and kept working in-game and in the company, focusing almost entirely on player feedback on Discord and the Steam forums, I’m sure what has made the difference has been our community managers, who have done and continue to do a amazing job to maintain communication with the players”
The developer adds that Steam Deck has also contributed to the facet of success and the Legacy of the Moonspell DLC was created with some reluctance for his part.
“As a gamer, I love the idea of still being able to get content for the games I love, but nowadays it seems to me that DLC is designed around monetization and not around good player service. Having a negative preconception of DLCs, I was very hesitant to try to make one, but I also couldn’t keep adding things to it. [Vampire Survivors] for fun while there was company to think about. And just like that, here comes the DLC! My biggest hope is that we’ve managed to make it a fair deal for the players and that they like it, that’s something I as a player would be delighted to see in stores.”
Regarding whether we will see Vampire Survivors en PlayStation o Nintendo Switch, the truth is that it is still a swampy terrain. “Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to talk specifically about other platforms, as our marketing team could tell me off… really, who cares, let me tell you, I hope to release it on Vita one day!” Galante explained. .
