For me, Gizmo was the key to the success of the entire franchise. And we have Steven Spielberg to thank for that, who said outright about two weeks before filming began, “You know, that Gizmo character that turns into the evil Gremlin after 20 minutes, I love him so much.” You have to keep it for the whole movie.” That was a nightmare for us because we didn’t have the technology and didn’t think we could make it look realistic for a whole movie. But we managed it.
Basically, little Mogwai was supposed to quickly transform into Stripe, the gremlin antagonist of the plot. Ultimately, Gizmo remained a separate character. His movements and appearance posed a real technical challenge for the film crew, as there was no background replacement technology at the time!
