“Weeds” is back again. More than 10 years after the end of the 8th season, the dramedy series of the US broadcaster Showtime returns to the screens. That doesn’t go down well with everyone.
- The successful dramedy series “Weeds” is to receive a reboot.
- 10 years in the future, we follow Nancy’s marijuana business after the drug was legalized in parts of the United States.
- In addition to lead actress Mary-Louise Parker, other cast members from “Weeds” are set to return for the upcoming series.
The “weeds” sprout again. The US broadcaster Showtime wants to bring the popular comedy series, which aired from 2005 to 2012, back to the screens.
For this, the original cast from back then should be brought back on board, as the US magazine “Deadline” reveals.
“Weeds” is about widowed mother Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) who searches for a way to support her family after the death of her husband. She starts growing and dealing marijuana. The reboot is set to continue her story 10 years after the use and sale of weed was legalized in parts of the US.
The announcement for the comedy series’ sequel comes just days after actor Justin Kirk (“Modern Family”) revealed himself in an interview with US magazine “Variety” had expressed skepticism about a remake of “Weeds”.
Kirk, who played Nancy’s brother-in-law Andy Botwin on the show, is skeptical even fans will want to see them as “old people” again. Still, it sounds like he’s ready to step back into his role and join the reboot.
I love these people, I love this character. I probably know as much about the future of the show as anyone else. I’ve heard rumors about different approaches. At one point it was said that it was a prequel with younger characters and we were only seen in flash forwards.
Justin Kirk to Variety
The new project is currently being worked on by the pay-TV channel Starz. The reboot is produced and written by Christian Torpe, creator of the popular Danish series “Rita”.
However, due to the ongoing writers’ strike, the work is currently on hold. However, if the strike ends soon, the Weeds reboot could even start in the first half of 2024.
The “Nurse Jackie” series is also being relaunched. Just like “Weeds” also with the original cast around Edie Falco.
“Weeds” and “Nurse Jackie” join Showtime’s new strategy of continuing to strengthen already established series rather than making new ones. This approach also includes The L Word, Billions, and Dexter series, which are set to continue through spin-offs and more.
