Gaming News What are the 8 Best GTA Video Games? Check out the leaderboard while you wait for GTA 6
Like the Zelda license or the Star Wars license we reviewed recently, the Grand Theft Auto license has some great nuggets. There are so many good games that you could say there aren’t any bad ones. Which complicates things when compiling the best titles list. Something we’ve embraced nonetheless.

GTA Liberty City: Coming to PlayStation Portable
Four years after the open-world revolution of Grand Theft Auto 3, GTA returns to Liberty City with GTA: Liberty City Stories. We return to the city of the third opus, which therefore still has some stories to tell. This time the plot revolves around Tony Cipriani, who is in hiding after an assassination attempt a few years before the events of GTA III (in which he appears several times). He then returns to Liberty City to find his place near Salvator Leone, the Leone family’s godfather. A classic scenario for the license that goes well with the gameplay offered: a first PlayStation Portable episode synonymous with success.
GTA ballad of gay Tony
Like The Witcher 3 or even 3, Grand Theft Auto 4 has one of the best expansions for video games. Ballad of the Gay Tony was released in 2009 and is part of the Episodes from Liberty City expansion trilogy. If this additional content is still set in The City of Liberty, we’re not playing Tony Cipriani or Nikolaï Bellic, we’re playing Luis Fernando Lopez. He is the bodyguard of Tony Prince, also known as “Gay Tony”, the owner of several popular nightclubs. Ballad of the Gay Tony is praised for its many additions (unreleased weapons, new activities), but above all for the finesse of writing its main character, who is often considered one of the most interesting in the series.
GTA III: a model of inspiration
In 2001, Grand Theft Auto 3 was released, the third installment in a license not yet at the forefront of video games. It is this title that takes the saga to another dimension: The open world embedded in GTA 3 is an unprecedented innovation. As much freedom as never before in video games, allowing everyone to write their own story alongside the main story. The latter follows Claude, a mute criminal who was put to death by his girlfriend during a failed robbery and seeks revenge. In summary, GTA 3 is a turning point in the history of video games.
Grand Theft Auto 4
Today, in 2023, being GTA 4 is difficult. It’s sandwiched between GTA 3, which revolutionized the open world, and GTA V, which constantly pushes its limits by exploding sales records a little more every day. This fourth numbered opus has nothing to be ashamed of, however. It’s still the product of Rockstar Games’ chronic ambition. Seven years after GTA 3, this fourth numbered episode takes the fictional city of Liberty City as the setting with more freedom than ever. This time it’s Nikolai Bellic who must contend with financially dishonest cops and rival gangs while trying to uncover the truth about his past. GTA 4 is currently considered the best game in the license.
GTA San Andreas
Also considered one of the best GTA games in history: This is GTA: San Andreas, released in 2004. An unnumbered episode that is talked about for many reasons. First of all, its huge open world, which seems to be the culmination of a magic formula that Rockstar found several years earlier after GTA 3. Goodbye Liberty City and New York State. The fictional state of San Andreas is where the protagonist Clark Johnson wanders. The gameplay always corresponds to the identity of GTA, since it is necessary to help his gang regain influence. Topics such as crime, racial discrimination or the corruption of politicians are discussed.
GTA: Chinatown Wars
If we remember more about the episodes on PC and consoles, the GTA license also has solid nuggets on portable consoles. We’ve seen it with GTA: Liberty City in particular, but it’s also the case with GTA: Chinatown Wars, released in 2009 for Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable. We embody Huang: a member of the triad who wants revenge after the death of his father. We find the classic mechanics of the saga (car theft, robbery, etc.) in this installment. However, it contrasts with one aspect: stylized 2D graphics and the use of the touch function of the DS (as well as the smartphones a year later).
GTA 3: Vice City
Like Tears of the Kingdom for Zelda or God of War: Ragnarok for GoW, GTA has also made its episode responsible for the successor to a masterpiece: this is GTA: Vice City, released a few months after the revolution of GTA 3. The player changes then to Vice City, a fictional city inspired by Miami (Florida) in the United States. There he plays Tommy Vercetti in the 80s: He is a former criminal who was sent to Vice City by the Italian mafia family to monitor a drug deal. Except that the exchange goes wrong and the Italian loses the money and the loot. What attract the troubles of the local mafia. Enough to force Tommy to get revenge and take power in Vice City.
GTA V: the king among kings
Impossible not to mention GTA V when it comes to ranking the license’s best games. It is one of the few titles available on three generations of consoles (seventh, eighth and ninth generation) and achieves one of the best starts in the history of video games: the “first day of its launch” it would have been 11 million units that have been distributed would be”’. A strong enthusiasm for the title that continues in 2023. A success that is explained by a world more open than ever and full of activities, all more different than the others. The narration is always present as there are three playable characters with neat writing. An already massive experience that can be enhanced with GTA Online online.
A ranking full of excellent video games, if not exceptional, that doesn’t mention other titles from the license that are also very good. To get an idea of Rockstar’s know-how that has almost never failed when developing a new game. We remember not so long ago the complicated reception of the remastered compilation Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Nonetheless, there seems nothing to fear for the sixth numbered opus, which is still awaited.
