A Clockwork Revolution is a steampunk role-playing game from developer inXile that was announced a few weeks ago at the Xbox Game Showcase. From the first look, we’ve been interested in learning more about the BioShock-esque game and what the city–described in the trailer as a “progressive wonder”–is about.
Program Director Chad Moore has since take to twitter Sharing his own thoughts on A Clockwork Revolution. He declared the game “the bastard child of Arcanista and Vampire: Masked Blood,” featuring “deep world-building, a compelling narrative, crunchy RPG systems, engaging gameplay, and massive reactivity. “. Words that will make most RPG fans salivate.
“A Clockwork Revolution” will take place in Avalon, a huge steampunk-style city in which players will explore time travel. As a result, the player travels back in time and realizes that the city of Avalon was actually built using historical events. We all know it’s dangerous!
The trailer shown at the Xbox Game Showcase gave us a brief look at Clockwork Revolution’s gameplay and the city of Avalon, with players taking part in events past and present. Actions you’ve participated in in the past will ultimately affect your present, and it appears that your relationship with the people of Avalon will suffer as a result.
The folks at PCGamer first pointed out that A Clockwork Revolution’s project director, Chad Moore, was a former developer at Troika Games, the studio founded by the Fallout 1 creators. Two great titles from Troika Games include Vampire: The Masquerade, and Bloodlines and Arcanum are the bastard children of two RPGs that Moore claims are Clockwork Revolution.
That means Moore is definitely no stranger to helping create strong RPGs, and considering he’s worked on both games, Moore’s words carry more weight than the usual marketing gimmicks that tie the game to the genre’s best. Top games for comparison.
Additionally, Troika Games co-founder and Fallout 1 developer Jason Anderson is also working on Clockwork Revolution. Anderson also helped produce Arcanum and Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodline, as well as Wasteland 2, Project V13 and Evolve.
What the hell is the rest of the inXile team doing? Well, the developer is behind the squad-based RPG, Wasteland, the Bard’s Tales trilogy, and Tormet: Tides of Numerra. So, these guys are certainly no strangers to RPGs.
Ultimately, all signs point to A Clockwork Revolution being at least a solid RPG, as there’s a rich RPG experience behind it and from which it draws inspiration.
