What do you mean Silent Hill: Ascension, arguably the worst game in the entire series, won an Emmy for Outstanding Innovation in a Programming Program for Emerging Media?

arguably, Ascension, Emerging, Emmy, entire, game, Hill, Innovation, media, Outstanding, program, programming, series, Silent, won, worst

I can’t understand why the ridiculously bad Silent Hill: Ascension won an Emmy.

We all know that Silent Hill: Ascension is a terrible “game,” right? I put that in quotes because it’s hard to actually call it a game, since you just have to vote on which cutscenes play. And yet, somehow, it unexpectedly won an Emmy. Yes, the same Emmys that are given to truly great television shows, not Ascension. The award it specifically won was for “Outstanding Innovation in a Program for Emerging Media,” and I don’t know about you, but I don’t think the words “outstanding” or “innovative” are appropriate for a game as bad as Silent Hill.

I’m not actually sure what Ascension innovates at all? Does it let people play a “game” together live? Twitch Plays Pokemon did that a decade ago, and it doesn’t have the ability to pay for better polls to make one outcome more likely — it’s just a reminder of how confusing Ascension’s monetization system is, without even mentioning its season pass. And yet, somehow, its Emmy win is made all the more confusing because it turns out it wasn’t the only thing that won the award.

Apple Vision Pro mixed reality Marvel game What If…? – An Immersive Story also won the award, but the problem is that it was also the only piece of media nominated. Yes, of the two works nominated, both won the award, but this seems to be based on the fact that this is a juried award, which means only a small number of people actually vote (in this case probably because they are both games, so you need people who really understand the industry).

Emmys or no Emmys, though, I wouldn’t go see Ascension, especially considering the Silent Hill 2 remake is coming out soon, and our own Kelsey thinks that movie is actually surprisingly good based on a recent trailer.
