Valve Steam published current user information, which was determined in the context of voluntary and anonymous surveys. This shows which processors and graphics cards Steam players use, which VR headsets are most popular and which operating systems dominate.
On Steam you can look at the complete data and graphics. Especially the graph of the CPUs used shows an exciting development. Accordingly, AMD has fought for an ever larger piece of the pie over the past few years.
While competitor Intel still provided around 80 percent of the processors for Steam users in December 2019, the share had been reduced by around ten percent by May 2021. Now an AMD CPU calculates in 30 percent of the game PCs on Steam.
It is important to note that not all Steam PCs are included here. So only the data that came from volunteer participants in the study were evaluated. Nevertheless, the trend towards more AMD CPUs is clearly visible.
AMD’s successful race to catch up
Until 2017, Intel CPUs were clearly ahead in the gaming sector. The performance of the i-processors from Intel could not even come close to being matched by AMD’s FX series. AMD only began its successful catch-up with the high-performance Ryzen processor series, the numerous variants of which have been available on the market since 2017. Since then, AMD has played a bigger role again.
