In 2007, the co-founder and long-time CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, presented the first iPhone to the world. 14 years later we have arrived at the iPhone 12 and its various versions Mini, Pro and Pro Max. What has changed in terms of performance since then?

The YouTube channel PhoneBuff, which specializes in smartphone tests, has now investigated this question and made the speed comparison: How much faster is the iPhone 12 than the original, which is also known as the iPhone 2G? You can watch the full video in English here:

Let’s first take a look at the technical data. Of course, a lot has happened there. The iPhone 2G is still based on a processor with “only” one core and that clocks “only” at 412 MHz, while the iPhone 12 has six cores of 3.1 GHz each.

The technical details in the overview:

Construction year

processor

random access memory

Storage

resolution

iOS-Version

This is how the smartphones are tested: PhoneBuff programs a robotic arm for this. He then runs a set of basic applications. These are, for example, calculators, Safari browsers, App Store, and a few more. First, however, the stopwatch is started, then each individual app is called up, the home button takes you back and the next app is selected.

The whole thing happens in two passes to see how quickly the programs are loaded from the working memory.

How much faster is the iPhone 12?

The iPhone 12 manages the first run (i.e. freshly after restarting the device so that none of the programs are already in the RAM) in almost exactly 40 seconds. For lap two it takes just over 20 seconds.

The iPhone 2G takes a minute and 26 seconds for the first run alone. And the second round is not much faster, it lasts a minute and three seconds.

  • iPhone 12: 40.08 seconds (lap 1), 20.44 seconds (lap 2)
  • iPhone (2G): 1: 26.4 minutes (lap 1), 1: 02.8 minutes (lap 2)

The relatively slower second run of the original iPhone is due to the significantly smaller working memory of 128.0 MB and the fact that the iOS version does not support multitasking.

iPhone 12 only two and a half times faster?

What is not shown in the test or can be shown due to the limitations of the early iOS version are modern apps, for example for rendering videos. Here the iPhone 12 will be much faster than the iPhone 2G.

A lot has happened in the past 14 years. In simple applications, the differences are less significant and the original iPhone can keep up with it despite the dramatically inferior hardware. But the original’s weaknesses are also becoming apparent in the case of cameras and co., Quite apart from more complex applications that operate on more cores, for example.

What do you all mean? Are you surprised at how well the old iPhone still performs? Feel free to write it in the comments!
