The resolution of the monitor has a major impact on our gaming experience in several ways. How sharp is the picture, how much of the game world do we see and what are the hardware requirements? We would like to know exactly which area you find yourself in based on a new survey.
We chose a total of eight different resolutions. The most common 16:9 format is represented three times, as is the increasingly popular 21:9 format. The even wider aspect ratio of 32:9 can be found twice. The following options are available:
In order to avoid any ambiguity, we name the concrete amounts of pixels in the horizontal and vertical instead of designations like 4K
. By the way: You can find out what the 4K term is all about in detail in the following article:
Did you know that 4K is not a resolution at all? This is what the abbreviation for screens stands for
A quick look into the past
The 16:9 format has been an integral part of the PC sector for ages, the corresponding resolutions Full HD (1920×1080), WQHD (2560×1440) and 4K (3840×2160) dominate the monitor market. In the past, on the other hand, completely different aspect ratios were relevant.
The first major monitor comparison test in GameStar history (August 1998 issue) was about 19-inch CRT monitors and the resolutions 1024×768 (4:3), 1280×1024 (5:4) and 1600×1200 (4:3). Years later, when TFT screens gained more and more ground in the gaming sector, the focus was initially on 16:10 resolutions such as 1680×1050 and 1920×1200.
In the following podcast you can find out what is particularly important for current and upcoming monitors and which models our hardware experts at GameStar Tech rely on:

We are curious to see whether the 16:9 format that has dominated for many years will sooner or later be replaced by another aspect ratio such as 21:9 or even 32:9. Perhaps our new survey will already give you a hint, which is one of the reasons why we would like to thank you for everyone who took part.
