Cyber criminals are also active on WhatsApp. As early as July, the link to a supposed competition was spreading in Messenger. Coca-Cola is said to be giving away mini-fridges to mark its 130th anniversary. These days, the scam is making a comeback. Instead of Coca-Cola, however, the “Becks” brand is used as a decoy. In fact, taking part in the competition will lead you into a subscription trap.
Anyone who clicks on the link, which usually begins with Tinyurl5.ru, and enters their personal data, concludes a subscription to a service that charges you 43.50 dollars every 14 days, the Spanish warns National Cybersecurity Institute
It is not the first time that cybercriminals have used WhatsApp to spread fake sweepstakes on behalf of large companies. Most recently, the hardware store OBI fell victim to such campaigns in the run-up to Father’s Day and Milka before Easter.
