The original Overwatch era seemed to be seen as a standalone product, as it would be integrated with Overwatch 2.
Speaking at a recent Reddit AMA, Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed what Blizzard had previously said that the Overwatch and Overwatch 2 clients would be merged to avoid fragmenting the player base.
“When Overwatch 2 launches on October 4, it will replace the current Live Service,” Keller said.
As former game director Jeff Kaplan said at the event, Blizzard all but confirmed this when it first announced Overwatch 2 at BlizzCon 2019, saying it was part of the team’s mantra of leaving no players behind.
The AMA also reiterated that all cosmetic items and loot boxes will be transferred to Overwatch 2 upon launch. Since the game will not contain loot boxes, unopened boxes will magically open when transferred.
It also reiterates previous comments Blizzard made at BlizzCon 2019, when it said that all Overwatch looks and progression would carry over to Overwatch 2.
When the game launches, you can look forward to a free live experience, including regular seasonal updates and a Battle Pass with new content for heroes, game modes, maps, cosmetics, and more. Season 1 of the game will feature new heroes Sojourn, Junker Queen and an unannounced support hero as well as a new 5v5 PvP experience. You can also look forward to redesigned heroes, new maps and modes, and a reimagined competitive experience.
Blizzard also recently provided a roadmap to give beta participants, Early Access and potential Overwatch 2 players a sense of what to expect from Season 2 in December and beyond.
Overwatch 2 will be released on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It will feature cross-progression and cross-play.
