When Blizzard invited us to play Diablo 4 for a week, three GameStar monster hunters rang the cathedral bells: Maurice, Fabiano and Micha talked a lot about Diablo 4 this year – about our expectations (with Diablo streamer jessirocks), about the question whether Blizzard can still be trusted after Diablo Immortal (with Kalle Koschinsky), about the possible pitfalls of the open world.
So far only one of us had played Diablo 4 – namely Maurice, more than three years ago at Blizzcon.
We couldn’t pass up the chance to finally play Diablo 4 together. Although: Because Blizzard only gave us one access, we had to play one after the other, but the thought counts!
That’s why we can talk extensively at this point about what surprised us positively in Diablo 4 and what still makes us skeptical about the future.
All episodes and formats in our podcast overview
For example, what did we like about the gameplay of Diablo 4? What else makes us suspicious and hopeful at the same time about the talent system? How diverse and interesting was the item loot, and how do we like the new aspects system that allows us to transfer special abilities from legendary items to rare (!) ones?
And of course: how much does the open world change the feel of Diablo 4?
Admittedly, we often agree on this, except for the open world. While Maurice copes surprisingly well with it, Micha still lacks an answer to the question of why Diablo needs a freely accessible and ready-to-play game world.
On the contrary: For him, the open world is the snag of the game – even if those horses could at least alleviate the problem. But in our demo, Blizzard didn’t allow horseback riding yet.
Those who prefer to read will of course also get all the information in Fabiano’s 40,000-character monster preview, and Maurice also rages and praises in his Diablo 4 video.
Addition: After our podcast recording, there are increasing indications that there are in fact no more runes and runewords in Diablo 4 – see the feedback from alleged beta participants on Reddit. We stick to our hope expressed in the podcast that they will come back – if not for the release, then at least in a season. Finally, the runes should significantly complement the character puzzles.
