Many great games suffer from poor marketing. Sometimes, they’re advertised to the completely wrong audience. Sometimes, they’re partnered with uncool or questionable brands. A lot of times, they’re hard to explain and need to be experienced firsthand to properly understand, so unless you can get a ton of people to try a demo, you’re stuck. This, by the way, is why, in the age of YouTube, our much-maligned profession is still valuable to consumers. At least that’s what I tell myself at night when I feel existential dread.
But sometimes, some great games are held back simply by a poor first impression. Perhaps a pre-rendered trailer with no actual scenes or assets from the game doesn’t even do the job of setting the tone. One of these was the recently released trailer for Dragon Age: Veilward, which inspired the theme of this episode. In fact, some initially wondered if it was some sort of Fortnite tie-in, as it was so far away from the Dragon Age feel they knew. Thankfully, however, a 20-minute official gameplay demo the next day eased many people’s concerns. Whew.
So, what did our esteemed panel suggest? Good game, but terrible trailer? Find out in the latest edition of The Best Gaming Podcast Ever, conveniently available to you on this page or on the app you’re reading this on.
