Many PS4 games have not yet been implemented for the PS5 (Slim). As a PS5 owner, do you have to do without these games? No, at least not completely.
Backwards compatibility with consoles is always a thing. On some devices you can play games from the manufacturer’s previous consoles without any problems, on others this is only possible in a roundabout way and on some it is not possible at all. The good news first: The PS5 is backwards compatible, albeit with small restrictions.

PS5 compatible with almost all PS4 games
Basically, you can play PS4 games on your PS5 or PS5 Slim without any problems. This works both with digital games that you have bought online in the PS Store, as well as with physical games on disc. For the latter, of course, you need a PS5 with a drive so that the discs can be read.
PS4 games can be easily installed on your PS5 console; you can play either with your PS5 controller or by connecting a PS4 controller. But it only works with PS4 games and not with your PS5 games. And even though the PS5 is backwards compatible, there are some PS4 games that won’t work on the PS5.
Exceptions: These PS4 games are not compatible
Sony names a total of six PS4 titles that are not compatible with the PlayStation 5. These are the following games:
- Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
- Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
- Just Deal With It!
- Robinson: The Journey
- Shadwen
- We Sing
Otherwise, games that require certain additional devices such as PlayStation VR also run without any problems on the PS5. At least Sony’s new console is compatible with most accessories. However, you may need an adapter to be able to connect the accessories to the PS5, such as the PlayStation Camera for PS4. Sony also has a little extra for you.
Upgrades for PS4 games
Some PS4 games offer you a free upgrade to the PS5 version when you insert them into the PlayStation 5. The download is usually automatic, but you can also download it manually from the PS Store. Games with such a free upgrade include Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny 2, Resident Evil Village and Horizon Forbidden West.
Even games without such an upgrade are often displayed on the PS5 with a better refresh rate or resolution. However, that always depends on the game in question.
You can even take your saves from the PS4 to the PlayStation 5. As a PS Plus subscriber, you can transfer your saves via the cloud, but it also works without a subscription. Then you have to transfer the saves via a USB stick, which is a little more complicated.
And what about even older PlayStation games? Unfortunately, you can’t play PS3, PS2 or PS One games on your PS5. Since many popular PlayStation games from previous generations have now been re-released for PS4 or PS5, this may be bearable for many fans.
