Last night at The Game Awards, we got our first official look at The Witcher 4 via a cool new trailer that showed off some of the witchcraft of the game's protagonist, Ciri.
Geralt's fateful stepdaughter taking over control of the series from him has been one of the theories put forward by fans since it was first announced via an image of a medallion in the snow. Now that we know this is the case, CD Projekt has explained some of the reasons why it chose to take the game in this direction.

Speaking to PC Gamer, TW4's game director Sebastian Kalemba and executive producer Gosia Mitréga revealed that this was a course of action first proposed by the studio nearly a decade ago, when it was wrapping up production and releasing The. The Witcher 3 – Ciri clearly plays a big role in it and is even playable in some missions.
“I remember the discussion after the release of Wild Hunt that this was a natural way for her to prove herself…it was a very natural choice for us,” Kalumba said, adding: “There were a lot of There's a lot of room to explore, because she's such a nuanced character, and the beginning of her journey gives us freedom and a lot of opportunities to dig into and take advantage of. That said, don't worry that old Gerry from the Riviera will be allowed to drink wine away from any of the action in The Witcher 4 – CD Projekt has now officially confirmed that he'll be making an appearance in the film. Kalumba didn't offer any details about what White Wolf will be doing in the game, but he did insist that Geralt is important to both the developers and Ciri.
