news culture Who from Oppenheimer or Barbie will win the box office war this summer? We already have an idea…
Here we are, the summer blockbuster wars have begun! In the ring? Barbie and Oppenheimer, of course! Who will win the fight? American analysts already have part of the answer.
Barbie and Oppenheimer are two completely different films: one is a puppet comedy, the other is a dramatic biopic about the history of the atomic bomb. The two feature films have been available in France since July 19, but will not be released in the US until July 21.
According to experts, Greta Gerwig’s film should gross $100 million in the US on its first weekend of airing, while Christopher Nolan’s film would gross half that, or $50 million. Why such a difference in income? Experts explain this with the tone of the Barbie film: a comedy is likely to attract more viewers to the cinemas than a drama. The length of the feature films also plays a major role in the success of these two works. On the one hand, “Barbie” lasts 1:40 hours, while Oppenheimer monopolizes the audience for no less than 3:01 hours. Analysts say people tend to be reluctant to stay in theaters as long as Christopher Nolan’s. Finally, Barbie’s marketing, based on various collaborations with AirBnb, Burger King, or even a scooter brand, may have had a bigger impact on audiences than Nolan’s film.
Barbenheimer, a fun competition
Social networks are very imaginative as the rivalry between the two films has resulted in many fan arts of the stars of the two works in their respective graphic styles. On Twitter we could see different posters with Margot Robbie in Oppenheimer style and vice versa Cillian Murphy in Barbie style. Finally, various tweets amuse themselves about this rivalry in a different way: “A real man will see Barbie, and not the Poppenheimer impostor by Christopher Polan,” reads, among other things, on Twitter.
