Frostpunk shines in the Ice Age
What is Frostpunk about?
Genre: Build-up strategy | Developer: 11 Bit Studios | Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One | Release: 24. April 2018
The game takes you into an alternative timeline of the 19th century. Humanity was brought to the brink of extinction by a new ice age and can only brave the deadly cold thanks to a huge, coal-powered steam generator.
You slip into the role of the leader of the survivors and build a city around the heat pending generator. From now on you are responsible for the concerns of the whole population. Frostpunkt spices up the strategic decisions with a good helping of survival, which in some moments quickly makes you sweat on your forehead.
None of the decisions you make in the course of a game are just “good” or “bad” – rather, it is important to find the best choice for the common good. And it may well happen that you knowingly leave some residents to die in order to save many more people.

Frostpunk and its DLC is one of the best building games you can play
How does Frostpunk play?
At the beginning it’s all about survival. You send your workers out in to the freezing cold to gather urgently needed resources. The new home needs coal so that the generator does not stop working. You use wood to build the first buildings and build roads. As the game progresses, steel is added as a resource for advanced buildings.
In the workshop you can research important technologies in order to improve the steam generator, which in turn unlocks new options. At the same time, you have to keep an eye on the temperature in addition to the resources. Hard decisions have to be made by minus 40 degrees Celsius at the latest: You don’t have enough energy to always supply the entire city. So a few people have to freeze to death to save the community.
And the residents don’t accept everything: The values for hope and dissatisfaction tell you how things are going in your settlement. Every decision has a direct effect on the further progress of the game. This creates an addictive pull from urban expansion, exploration and the struggle for survival.

Who is the game worthwhile for?
As you can see from the description above: Frostpunk is an addicting game, but definitely not for the faint of heart! However, if you’ve always enjoyed making momentous decisions and thriving under time pressure, the title is definitely worth a look! Our four recommendations in the Epic Sale for little money are also worth a look.
