Across three games and several add-ons, Dr agon Age tells a complex fantasy story about gods, demons and magicians. Only absolute series connoisseurs will know the names and meanings of all the characters that appear.
If you are starting the series with Dragon Age: The Veilguard or simply cannot remember any names and are wondering who the Hero of Ferelden
We will give you the answer. At the same time, we will assess whether he or she could also play a role in the latest Dragon Age spin-off.
If you lack basic knowledge of the history and world of Dragon Age, we strongly recommend reading the story recap by expert Steffi first. It is also an excellent way to refresh your memory if you have experienced the first three games a long time ago or have not played them at all:
Who is the hero or heroine?
The Hero of Ferelden
is your character in Dragon Age: Origins. She is also known as The Guardian
. What exactly your character looks like and where he comes from depends on you, of course. When you create your character, you decide on his gender and choose one of six origin stories.
You also choose your character’s race – human, elf or dwarf. What always remains the same, however, is the major role that the hero or heroine plays in fighting back the dark spawn and the archdemon.
Who are the darkspawn and the archdemon?
The darkspawn are evil creatures that live beneath the earth’s surface. They are always searching for the Old Gods. If they find one, it awakens as an archdemon (that looks like a dragon) and, together with the spawn, begins an attack on the peoples living on the surface.
For this achievement, the character is finally awarded the hero title by which he is known. Ferelden is a nation in the south of Thedas – the world of Dragon Age – which is the setting for the events of Dragon Age: Origins.

Where is he or she now?
Your decisions in Dragon Age: Origins also determine how the story ends for your own character. Depending on how you behave, the following can happen:
- You die in the fight against the archdemon.
- You survive and stay with the Grey Wardens (a warrior order dedicated to fighting the darkspawn).
- You survive and become Chancellor of Ferelden, advising the rulers there.
- You survive and become the queen or princess of Ferelden (only possible with female characters).
- You survive and become the king of Ferelden (only possible with male, human characters).
In Dragon Age: Inquisition we also learn more about the fate of the character if he or she survived. He or she has left Ferelden and is looking for a cure for the Ruf
.
What is the reputation?
The Call is a kind of song or melody that only the darkspawn and the Grey Wardens can hear. The Wardens only begin to hear the Call several (up to 30) years after their initiation ritual. They then go underground to die in a final battle against the darkspawn.
If you complete a quest, you will even receive a letter from the character. Depending on how Origins turned out for you, the content of the message will differ slightly. In any case, the heroine will support your mission and send you some words of encouragement.
Does the Hero of Ferelden appear in Veilguard?
Since your character can also die in Origins, her appearance in the fourth Dragon Age could be merely optional. Given this, it seems relatively unlikely that she will play a larger role.
Of course, it is entirely possible that the hero or heroine will be mentioned, or perhaps communicate with you as part of a side quest, similar to Inquisition. However, you should not necessarily expect to come face to face with the character.
After all, for such an appearance, The Veilguard would have to take into account at least some of your choices regarding race, class, backstory, romance, and more, and create a variety of different dialogues.
