It was a declaration of war, even if no one had said it. When the Endless Legends studio Amplitude announced its new Humankind project at Gamescom 2019, the comparisons to Civilization shot up like huts from the Stone Age.
Another turn-based grand strategy game that spans all of human history, including wars, research, culture and religion – how could this not be interpreted as an attack on civilization? As a very welcome attack, of course, because Civ would always do well to compete.
We now know that the Civilization comparison didn’t do Humankind any good. Because with all the good approaches, Humankind shows all the more clearly why Civ is so difficult to beat.
Micha and Reiner discuss the reason for this with strategy game streamer Writing Bull, who on twitch played both Civilization and Humankind through and through and has also tried out the new Humankind addon Together We Rule.

Together we discuss the strengths that Humankind undoubtedly has – the terrain system, the tactical combat, the generally high-quality presentation. Writing Bull also considers some features to be underestimated, such as haggling with influence points or bonus-giving religions.
At the same time, Humankind has serious weaknesses, especially when you put Civilization next to it. Because like its role model, Humankind offers different game paths and options, but these are largely charades because each game follows the same pattern. Civilization encourages us to try things, to explore game mechanics much more – and then rewards us for it.
In addition, Humankind demonstrates how damn difficult it is to balance a global strategy game with all its interlocking systems – especially since Amplitude tripped itself up here with the culture change mechanism.
But the French trip themselves up even more with their own arrogance. Because with Games2Gether they actually even have a program that allows their fans to give feedback – but then they don’t listen to this feedback…
Writing Bull details what’s new in Humankind: Together We Rule featured on Twitch.
