If you still haven’t been able to get hold of a PlayStation 5 or have waited to buy it for other reasons, you now have to bite the bullet: Sony has announced that all versions of the popular console immediately increase in price by 50 dollars.
Of course, the Japanese group mentioned in the course of the announcement Official PlayStation Blog also the reasons that led to this decision. And most of you should already have guessed it in view of your own everyday life, which is becoming more and more expensive: Sony also has to bow to the increasing global inflation in order to continue to bring the PlayStation 5 to the people in a halfway profitable way.
The new prices in detail
As already mentioned, both the Digital Edition and the variant with a built-in Blu-ray drive are affected. Due to the price increase, the new prices for Europe are as follows:
- PS5 with UHD Blu-ray drive: 549,99 Euro (old RRP: 499.99 dollars)
- PS5 Digital Edition: 449,99 Euro (old RRP: 399.99 dollars)

The price increase also affects most of the other countries where Sony operates. The domestic market in Japan will be spared until mid-September, but then the price screw will be tightened here too. Only the USA is spared from the increase.
Sony itself explains this decision as follows:
The global economic situation is a challenge that is no doubt felt by many of you around the world. We see high global inflation rates and unfavorable exchange rates impacting consumers and putting pressure on many industries. Based on these difficult economic conditions, SIE [Sony Interactive Entertainment, Anm. d. Red.] Made the difficult decision to increase the PlayStation 5’s suggested retail price in select markets in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States.
There is at least a small consolation: According to its own statement, Sony would like to with the highest priority
continue to work to improve the worldwide availability of the PlayStation 5.
