Bungie Has grown into a studio capable of handling multiple games. As developers continue to push out content destiny 2there’s no end to the end of support for the long-running loot shooter–even if the Final Shape expansion sounds like the end of major content.
As development on Destiny 2 continues, a fork team (made up of many former Destiny developers) has been working on marathon, an escape shooter named after the classic Bungie game. Marathon was just announced back in May, and the developers said it would be in the dark for a long time, reappearing later to discuss specifics.
But if you’ve been following Bungie, you might be familiar with another mysterious new project it’s working on: matter. Bungie trademarked Matter back in 2018, and the studio has been making very brief hints at the nature of the project, calling it a “whimsical” loot game in a job ad.
Now, as the Federal Trade Commission puts Microsoft on trial over its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Xbox has revealed every other studio and publisher it considered buying before Activision, including Bungie, of course.
As part of the briefing, Microsoft shared with IGN a general overview of the studio, its headcount, future expansion plans, its notable games, and of course, its unannounced projects in the works.
One such game is Matter, which Microsoft says is expected to release in 2025. Notably, there’s no mention of Marathon in the document, nor does it list any Destiny 2 expansions after Beyond Light, which was released in 2020. It stands to reason that Microsoft probably didn’t know Marathon existed when it created the document, or it would have included something like “new unannounced game” in the briefing.
Still, if Matter is indeed scheduled for release in 2025, it might not be too far from a reveal or a trailer release. Matter is also likely to be a working title, and the official game title is likely to be something else – although Bungie likes its one-word game title.
