If in doubt, Microsoft recommends that you do not install it: the April security update for Windows 10 and Windows 11. After some users previously complained about problems with the update, Microsoft now officially admits that the security update can cause difficulties.
For many Windows users, the update (KB5036893) is causing significant VPN connection problems. In the worst case scenario, you will no longer be able to use your VPN client at all. The same can happen if you install the April 2024 preview update. Microsoft announcesto work on the problem. There will be an update in the next version release.
Windows Update: Emergency solutions only help temporarily
If you are an avid VPN user who regularly uses it to stream content from abroad or hides your IP address while surfing the Internet, you may not want to install the update at first.
If you have already run it, you can uninstall it via the Windows settings and the update history there so that your VPN service works properly again. The problem: Without the update, your system is less protected and may have one or two security holes.
Alternatively, Microsoft advises everyone who has installed the update to either Windows Help app to use (private user) or on that Microsoft Support for Business-Portal (company) to resort to. But even these options only help temporarily.
Problem with security update is not an isolated case
It is not the first time that Microsoft has had to admit problems as a result of a security update. For example, the October update from last year led to a number of crashes and error messages for Windows users. At the same time, Microsoft continues to struggle with the fact that many PC owners still prefer Windows 10 instead of Windows 11.
