Particularly important files are displayed for quick access on the new Windows 11 start menu. If you don’t like this arrangement, you can easily remove the recommended files.
Windows 11 is continually introducing new design improvements, such as the completely redesigned and center-aligned start menu. The “Recommended” list that is automatically generated there allows you direct access to the most recently and frequently opened files.
The feature is, in a sense, a replacement for the timeline listed under “Active Applications” or “Task View” in Windows 10, which Microsoft removed in Windows 11. You can use it to open your most important files directly with a mouse click, without having to go through the file explorer.
If you don’t use the “Recommended” start menu block, you can remove it completely from the start menu. If you often share your computer with other people, you can avoid them seeing your most important files at a glance.
If only individual entries or suggestions in “Recommended” bother you, you can alternatively delete them there. Windows 11 then displays another probably relevant file in the same place instead.
The following sections show how you can customize the “Recommended” list in this way or remove it completely from the start menu.
You can also completely hide the “Recommended” list in the Windows 11 start menu using the following steps.
If you miss the ribbon bar in the Windows 11 file explorer, you can easily restore it with a registry hack.
We’ll also show you how to align the start menu to the left again in Windows 11 or completely restore the old Windows 10 look.
