Rumors about release, features and technology
Windows 11 is only a year old, but Microsoft is said to be already working on a Windows 12. Here we collect rumors and facts about the next operating system from Redmond.
Microsoft’s current operating system has been called Windows 11 since 2021. Even if we hear little about a successor, a team of engineers is currently said to be working on a new Windows version. Here we collect all the rumors and facts about Windows 12 for you – even if the release is still a long way off.
Release: When will Windows 12 appear?
Microsoft is said to be working on the new version of the operating system from March 2023. When Windows 12 actually appears, however, is still unknown at this point in time. We know from Redmond that a new major version should appear every three years. According to this, the time would have come in 2024. However, the next major version does not necessarily have to be Windows 12. The new major version could also be a further improved Windows 11.
How Much Will Windows 12 Cost?
It is within the realm of possibility that Microsoft could also offer existing installations a free update option for the next Windows version. This was already the case from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and most recently from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
Lately, licenses for Windows have also turned out to be very stable in price. As for the predecessor, Microsoft requires Windows 11 Home in the official store 145 dollars and 259 dollars for the Pro version. However, you can get the licenses cheaper in electronics retailers, for example at Cyberport for currently 113.90 dollars. The Pro version costs 155.90 dollars there.
Test Windows 12 in advance
Microsoft has changed its own test program for Windows 12 and added another test channel. You can test a very raw version of the software via the so-called ”Canary” channel. However, this will probably still be characterized by bugs, which will make it rather uncomfortable to use.
New preview builds of Windows 11 should approach the look of the new generation. You can probably disable the date and time in the system tray.
What innovations can you expect?
Design und User Interface
Away from an art concept, there is a leak that loud windowscentral should come from a Microsoft keynote.
In it you can see a rounded taskbar, a search function on the top half of the screen and weather information on the top left. However, since Windows 11 is still undergoing major changes in terms of the user interface, this may also be an upcoming version of the current OS.
Artificial intelligence
Chief Product Officer Panos Panay had already hinted at the deep integration of AI features in Windows 12 at CES 2023. Above all, Microsoft’s ambition to incorporate ChatGPT into its products could also shape the user experience with the new Windows.
Security
Since Windows Defender reliably protects the operating system in Windows 10 and 11 as an integrated component, it will certainly appear again in Windows 12.
There is also a half-baked rumor that the new Windows will require two TPM modules instead of just one. But it might be a joke. Windows 11 already has a so-called Trusted Platform Module, which protects the boot process as a chip on the circuit board, for example.
Customized ARM version
With the Microsoft SQ 3, Microsoft already offers an ARM-based computing unit in its own laptop portfolio as an alternative to Intel processors. They should be stronger now. This will probably require its own optimized Windows version, which will probably be introduced with Windows 12.
Windows 12 is not expected to support Arm32 apps even initially. The functionality was still built into Windows 10 and Windows 11, although the ARM architecture is now more likely to be set to 64-bit. However, this should only affect a few apps, which could also still be updated.
System Requirements
A blog post by Desk mud according to Windows 12 should run with Intel processors from the 8th generation. Microsoft will certainly also support a range of AMD CPUs. In addition, the new Windows could require twice as much memory. Instead of at least four gigabytes, there are eight gigabytes of RAM in the room. That would be due to the cloud PC, which is already being tested in the Windows Insider program.
Note: This constantly updated article is based on leaks, analyst statements, editorial assessments and rumors, the veracity of which is difficult for us to verify from a distance. Until the formal presentation of Windows 12, you should therefore view the information with a certain skepticism.
