Netflix officially confirmed the animated Witcher film “Nightmare of the Wolf” in January 2020. The anime is developed by the Korean studio Mir (The Legend of Korra) and produced by Laura S. Hissrich, the latter is also the showrunner of the Witcher TV series with Henry Cavill. The anime is scripted by Beau DeMayo, who has already co-written season 1 of The Witcher.
The story of the film revolves around the witcher Vesemir – Geralt’s foster father and mentor from the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski and the video games from CD Projekt Red. The official synopsis by Nightmare of the Wolf is already available on Netflix and reads as follows:
“Long before he mentors Geralt, Vesemir begins his personal journey as a sorcerer after the mysterious Deglan claims him thanks to the law of surprise.”
It is currently not known who will lend Vesemir his voice in Nightmare of the Wolf. In season 1 of The Witcher, Theo James was briefly heard as a young Vesemir in episode 8 – the actor from the Divergent series could also set Vesemir to music in the anime. First rumors about the filming
Even before the official announcement, there were first rumors of a film adaptation. An entry at the Writers Guild of America listed screenwriter Beau DeMayo for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf even before Netflix officially confirmed the anime. The Writers Guild of America is a union for American screenwriters.
DeMayo wrote the third episode “Traitor Moon” in season 1 of The Witcher and was already able to gain experience with the universe. Whether he will adopt a similarly dark style as the author of Nightmare of the Wolf as in the episode cannot yet be answered.
