Witchfire, a gothic roguelite first-person shooter from Polish indie developer The Astronauts, was recently showcased during the Future Games Show Spring Showcase.

The video features commentary from Senior Game Designer Karol Krok, showing off the different types of spells available to Witch Hunters. These include spells, incantations, and curses that can be cast on enemies.

The Witchfire gameplay trailer and review showcases some powerful arcane magic.

The variety of spells available to a Witch Hunter is just as important as their arsenal of guns, and both are vital when wandering the Witchlands.

Spellcraft is designated as light spells and heavy spells. The former deploys faster and consumes less stamina. That said, it’s not as powerful as the latter. In the gameplay footage, the Witch Hunter casts a heavy spell that conjures a phantom bell that can stun nearby enemies if shot correctly.

The video also reveals the four core elements that make up most spells: air, earth, fire, and water. Each has unique properties, such as making enemies burn and increasing the damage they can take. Combining effects can be obtained by using different elemental spells in rapid succession.

The premise of Witchfire is that there is a raging war between witches and the church. In this alternate reality, witches are real and dangerous, but so are witch hunters. Armed with the wizard of the Vatican, you’ll fight witches and terrorists on behalf of your secret benefactor using an array of guns and forbidden magic.

After shifting development from arena-style combat to open combat, Witchfire is expected to launch into early access on the Epic Games Store this year.

The Early Access period will be exclusive to the Epic Game Store. Afterwards, the game will be released on other platforms such as Steam and game consoles after development is complete.
