Publisher Bandai Namco Palace and developers from software It has been announced that Elden Ring – the latest IP from the esteemed developer – has sold 12 million copies worldwide between PC, Xbox and PlayStation platforms. Given that the game only launched on February 25, this makes it one of the fastest-selling games in the developer’s catalog to date (Dark Souls 3, for example, still only sold 10 million copies in the last official count ).
As you’d expect from a game that performs so well from the start, publishers and developers are keen to capitalize on the momentum and take what they can from the game’s popularity. In a press release from From Software, we learned that the studio plans to expand Elden Ring as an IP and make more game-related work “with a view to going beyond the realm of gaming.”
Yasuo Miyakawa, President and CEO of Bandai Namco added: “We put a lot of effort into building Elden Ring so that we can exceed the expectations of our global fans. Likewise, we will continue to work hard to expand the brand beyond the game itself and incorporate into everyone’s daily life.”
This is an odd comment – what does “everyday life” comment mean? Elden Ring brand cereal? mobile phone? Vitamin supplements? who knows.
But it’s clear that the game’s publishers and developers are keen to keep Elden Ring at the forefront of the public consciousness for some time. Given Elden Ring’s debut as the best-selling game in February 2022 and so far in 2022, more hardcore action RPG-related content is always inevitable.
But what will it look like? Will we get the Elden Ring DLC? More bosses? More levels? The future of FromSoft and Bandai Namco is vast… we just hope that reviews like “Beyond Gaming” and “Everyday Life” don’t mean we’re going to get a poorly realized live-action Netflix special by Tom Holland De played, or something.
