Yakuza/Like A Dragon and Live Action!
After the resounding success of the series adaptation of the Fallout saga, Amazon quickly followed up with another video game adaptation. Like a Dragon: Yakuzaa Japanese live-action production based on Sega’s gangster game series will be released worldwide on Prime Video on October 24, 2024. At least half, since it is a six-part series that will be broadcast in two parts: the first three on October 24th and the following three on November 1st
The series follows Kazuma Kiryu, the protagonist of the original video game saga, and his friends between 1995 and 2005, two periods that suggest an adaptation of the first game, which followed the gangster after his release from a 10-year prison sentence. Kazuma is played by Ryoma Takeuchi, the star of the Japanese series Kamen Rider with his character Shinnosuke Tomari. In addition, at the Comic-Con, which took place last weekend in San Diego, the The company released a first teaser/trailer of the projectwhich teaches us in particular that Kento Kaku – best known for House of Ninjas – will play organized crime boss Nishiki, Kiryu’s former childhood friend. The entire trailer is based on the image of the symbolic tattoo on the protagonist’s back, interspersed with various action scenes and introducing the various characters.
An adaptation for Prime Video
A presentation that follows an initial announcement last June, which was shortly followed by a press conference at the picturesque Gajoen Tokyo Hotel. Event attended by Ryoma Takeuchi and Masharu Take, Kazuma’s interpreter and director of the show, respectively. When asked about the adaptation process, the actor explains that he is not “Playing Kiryu Kazuma without being in shape, so I knew I had to try it. It was not only a task for me, but also for the costume and makeup teams. It took me two and a half hours to get ready“, he explains. Then he adds: “This is partly thanks to Kiryu Kazuma and partly thanks to me. I got so close to the role that it was difficult to distinguish where it ended and where I began. In particular, I got fit for the role, wore the costume, etc. Instead of playing the role of Kiryu, I feel like he has become a member of the family“, he concludes.
Director Take explains: “Having someone with as much physical presence as Takeuchi makes all the difference. I understood that he knew his body better than anyone else, so I left it to him to get in shape“, he explains, before adding: “Takeuchi also did all the action himself. It was impressive“. Concerning Kiryu’s place in the plotthe director explains: “In 1995, the protagonist is still young and makes many mistakes, mistakes that lead him to spend ten years in prison and suffer the consequences when he is released in 2005. I tried to show these differences between the two periods and the actors also helped me to achieve this“. Like a Dragon: Yakuza is expected on October 24th, exclusively on Prime Video!
