The science fiction surprise from South Korea
Note to science fiction fans: A new nugget from South Korea has just arrived in France. This film is Concrete utopiaWebtoon adaptation Pleasant Bullying, Part 2: Pleasant Neighborsdirected by Eom Tae-hwa and starring Lee Byung-hun, best known for his performances in Common security area, A bittersweet life, The good, the bad and the crazy or I met the devil.
Produced in 2021, the feature film was released in South Korea last year before touring internationally and being presented at various festivals. Since there was no theatrical release, the distributor The Jokers ultimately acquired the rights to be able to offer the film directly on DVD and Blu-Ray. A release not to be missed, especially given the critical success of the film: on Rotten tomatoesConcrete Utopia has a top score of 100% from 56 reviews.
Concrete Utopia takes us to a post-apocalyptic version of Seoul after most of the city has been destroyed by a devastating earthquake. After this catastrophe, only one building remains standing. These residents then organize themselves to survive, but this last place of residence arouses desire among other victims of the earthquake.
The sequel is already available on Netflix
Note that Concrete Utopia is not the only film from the Pleasant Bullying webtoon since there is a sequel with the title Badland Hunter was created after the first feature film. This time it was directed by Heo Myeong-haeng with Ma Dong-seok (Last train to Busan, The gangster, the policeman and the murderer, The Eternals), this sequel pushes even further into the post-apo and offers a more or less independent story. Badland Hunter is now available on Netflix. A perfect opportunity to watch the two films back to back and organize a short marathon dedicated to Korean science fiction.
