After the unmissable Astro’s Playroom, Team Asobi feeds the PS5 with Astro Bot. Since its announcement at the beginning of the year, the game has enjoyed great popularity among players. Super Astro 3D World
Alarm! The PS5 mothership is under attack by a greenish creature that is tearing the cores out of its entrails! Weakened and broken, the machine crashes on a desert planet while its crew is scattered across the universe. Fortunately, Captain Astro has heroic lines of code in his AI that instruct him to find his lost comrades as well as the parts needed to repair the PlayStation ship. Passionately animated and equipped with graphics that are as pretty as they are colorful, Astro Bot takes us into a 3D platformer that combines tradition with a lot of modernity.
Team Asobi’s software builds on the solid foundations of Astro’s Playroom and adds a layer of new features. It is a rather classic platform game that does not offer great innovation in mechanics, but is above all about fun and wonder. Almost all the worlds to visit are based on a fun idea or an item of equipment that renews the experience, or even both at the same time. This surprising side of the tables makes the experience extremely entertaining, especially since the software adapts the best ideas of the tenors of the genre such as Mario, Psychonauts, Ratchet & Clank or even Crash Bandicoot.
The attack of slaps
Astro Bot is both beautiful and fluid, reminiscent of Playroom’s technical demo with a 100% use of the DualSense and fluid simulations to your liking. Even players who are not unconditional fans of this somewhat met allic artistic direction can only be delighted by a solid technology capable of responding to all the antics of the developers without any noticeable loading time. The worlds are varied, the music catchy and the bosses are not only gigantic but also particularly well worked out.
The search for components ripped from the PS5 mothership takes the player through around fifty main levels and some bonus worlds. From the introductory tutorial to the credits that appear after a dozen hours of play without a platinum attempt, Astro Bot has fun with everything and rolls out the red carpet for PlayStation licenses. Any excuse is good to throw a nod to the history of Sony’s famous consoles and the franchises that revolve around them. 150 emblematic stars of the brand, out of a total of 300 bots, are present in the six galaxies to explore. Fans will be delighted to find more or less strong references to The Last of Us, Sly Cooper, Journey and Tearaway, God of War, Uncharted, Ape Escape or even Horizon.
The ultimate back-to-school piece
As with the previous creation, the Japanese studio focuses on pure arcade fun, with controls that can be mastered in 5 minutes, relatively short levels and a total absence of RPG elements. Astro doesn’t gain new skills or XP points to trade in a skill tree: the only thing that counts here is fun. Packed with homages and excellent sequences, Astro Bot is a completely unbridled version of Astro’s Playroom. With Astro Bot, Team Asobi brings us close to the stars, with a blissful smile on our faces. Generous in everything it offers, it is an exceptional 3D platformer.
