Avatar: The Last Airbender is a beloved franchise, and with a new animated film on the horizon, the newest actor behind Katara is hoping she doesn’t mess it up.
The sequel to the Avatar series has been in the works for some time, and in April this year, the voice cast for the series was announced, with some lesser-known names, though Dave Bautista from Guardians of the Galaxy is also voicing the series, but the voice actor is unnamed. This group of new actors will take over beloved characters such as Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph, and in a recent interview with Collider, Katara’s new voice Jessica Marten talked about what it was like to take over the role, getting to know the other actors, and the weight of joining such a beloved series.

When asked what it means to be a part of such a beloved franchise, Maten said, “I’m really honored,” and continued, “It’s really cool. I met Eric Nan, who plays Aang, in LA a few weeks ago, and he’s a great guy. I met Dave Bautista in Toronto a few years ago. I knew Dave briefly in Toronto through mutual friends. He’s a great guy, too, so I’m really excited, and it’s a cast of incredible people, really kind people.”
“That’s what you want to do. You want to do projects with nice, cool people. I’m looking forward to it. The movie is coming out early next year. By booking this role honestly, I learned more about what Avatar: The Last Airbender means to people. I really hope I can do justice to the character and I hope people enjoy what I do. I just don’t want to disappoint anybody, that’s all.”
Overall, details about the new Avatar movie are still scarce, but the film takes place a few years after the original series, which told the story of the Gaang as adults. Of the original cast, only Dante Basco and another fan favorite, Zuko, return, while Irene Nan and Roman Zaragoza take over the roles of Aang and Sokka, respectively. The film is also currently scheduled to be released on January 30, 2026, so you may have to wait a while before you can see the trailer.
