Helldivers 2 is the new unexpected success of video games. Since launching on February 8, 2024, players continue to band together to defend democracy and Super-Earth. A popularity so important that it even surpasses the developers, who continue to work to resolve server utilization issues. In fact, players have been facing a waiting list to access the title for two days. But did you know that? The satirical tone of the title was heavily inspired by the cult film, Starship Troopers.
Helldivers 2: A Tribute to Starship Troopers
Published in 1997, the story is set in the 24th century as a muscular federation ensures order and virtue on Earth. The film focuses on five young people who have barely left high school and who, after an alien attack, decide to take part in the defense of the Earth. In fact, gigantic insects called arachnids, emerging from the edges of the galaxy, launch multiple attacks on the planet, one of which levels the air of Buenos Aires in just a few seconds. Full of enthusiasm and courage, the young adults will then fly into space to destroy these new enemies.
Given the scenario, it is therefore complicated not to draw a connection between Starship Troopers and Helldivers 2. The Terminids, the giant insects in the game developed by Arrowhead Game, are therefore a homage to arachnids. Note that in Helldivers 1, arthropods were considered players’ favorite enemies.
An unexpected spotlight
The inspiration of Helldivers gave Starship Troopers a lot of spotlight. According to data from TV statisticsAfter being ranked 109th in the film popularity rankings (based on total audience participation) on February 14, 2024, the feature skyrocketed to 19th on February 20. With a peak of 457,000 concurrent players on Helldivers 2 in the last 24 hoursIt was almost certain that many curious people would watch or rewatch this cult sci-fi film.
