Historical change in Dungeons & Dragons. Wizards of the Coast has made the decision of change the term “races” with which he refers to the different fantasy communities of the game. Instead, “species” will be the new word that will appear in your rules.
They explain from the company that the deleted word “has had prejudiced links between the people of the real world and the fantasy people of the D&D worlds.” Thus, the main objective is “meeting the needs of our players and fostering a welcoming space for all”.
Actually we are talking about an evolutionary policy that already began in 2014 with the arrival of the fifth edition of D&D. That is why there has been a “extraction of prejudices, stereotypes and unconscious biases of the past” regarding the species in the game. Therefore, in Unearthed Arcana we will see this substitution of “race” for “species”, although it is still in the testing phase.
While it is irrevocable to go back to using “race”, a poll will be released on December 21 for players to give their opinions on the modification. Wizards of the Coast has worked “in close coordination with multiple external cultural consultants” to make this decision.
