World of Warcraft: Civil War leveling changes spark controversy among well-equipped players as they become addicted to new content

A sudden update to the leveling experience in World of Warcraft: Civil War has the community in turmoil, as it has a huge impact on the power of characters equipped with gear from previous expansions when they go from level 70 to 80.

The reason for this change is obvious. In old content, a character with a full set of high-level gear can speed through leveling monsters in seconds, completely taking away any challenge from the leveling process. This also affects group content, as high-level characters in a group alongside lower-level characters wearing old content gear will find their DPS drops due to power balance.

OK, so what are the two sides of the argument? Why aren’t people particularly happy? Proponents of the fix (including the developers) don’t want upgrades to be too fast, too easy, and perhaps most importantly, too fast, too mindless. If you speed through the game on old gear, you’re not paying attention to all the great new content – you turn on your favorite podcast and just keep your head down. Sure it’s fun. But it’s not the intended way to experience the content.

Team imbalance is also a problem, because high-level players shouldn’t be outclassed by lower-level teammates no matter what. Unless they’re clicking spells and twiddling their keyboards, there’s no excuse for that.

The counterargument is interesting, though. Some players who previously blitzed their way through leveling earned high-end gear in the last expansion. It makes sense that they’d get into the new expansion faster, right? It’d be like a small reward for their hard work. Add to that the fact that these types of players — the ones who crave high-end gear — often just want to get to max level and start gearing up as quickly as possible, and you can understand why they’d object to a slower leveling pace.

This may also affect alternative characters (alts). A big part of this expansion is encouraging the use of multiple characters at once, so obstacles to leveling up quickly may cause some undesirable effects.

What do you think of this? Do you want to level up quickly with your old upgraded gear? Or do you prefer to sit back and enjoy the view when the new expansion is released? Let us know below!
