World of Warcraft Classic is getting a massive update September 26 Wrath of the Lich King Expansion. This is a bit of a big deal, especially for the thousands of players who have been honing their Alterac Valley or farming careers over the past few weeks. To celebrate the occasion, the official World of Warcraft Youtube channel has released a new trailer, and it’s absolutely perfect.
You can watch it yourself below, but in some cases this wasn’t created by the usual team of talented CGI artists who made amazing cutscenes for the expansion (like the excellent Dragon Island trailer). Instead, it comes from fan creator Hurricane, who has previously been responsible for a series of bespoke and exciting raid trailers.
In the trailer, you can see all the major features released by Wrath of the Lich King, including the Scourge invasion of Azeroth, players arriving in various Northrend regions and battling various monsters you can find there, challenging dungeons , and of course some Wintergrasp PvP. As a classic WoW player, one of the things that stood out to me was all the gear the different characters wore. Usually in trailers, everyone wears a nice, matching suit. But here, in a brilliant move that’s more reflective of the actual launch experience, player characters can be seen wearing a variety of gear that actual players will be equipping next week. The various raid gear from The Burning Crusade (and some bad blues, I think) stand out as excellent additions.
Plus, you know, this feels like a trailer for the nostalgic crowd, or at least those with a basic understanding of what the Lich King originally released. Simple things like seeing players looking at Wyrmrest or fighting on Grizzly Mountain are things you wouldn’t expect to see in a big expansion trailer.
