news business Would Apple try to compete with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with its own console?
Since the announcement of the acquisition of American publisher Activision Blizzard King, the video game industry has been in turmoil and everyone is wondering if an even bigger takeover is still possible or if Microsoft has definitely set the bar too high. Another consequence of this industry tremor was a spate of rumors surrounding Apple’s interest in consoles, and one of the Windows Central journalists indulged in a small comment on the subject.
When we see the stratospheric crowd What can Microsoft put on the table to grant itself the services the catalog by publisher Activision Blizzard King, we recognize the importance GAFAs have taken on over the last few decades, and Microsoft clearly has its place there: plus, it’s not for nothing that the famous acronym has been extended to include the Redmond-based company. So, among the GAFAM, one of them, namely Apple, seems to be watching the video game market with great interest. What convinces him to also start in the race?
Following its foray into the mobile space, particularly through its Apple Arcade service, Tim Cook’s company could consider developing a console. At least that’s what current rumors suggest. However, these are not particularly up-to-date, as rumors on this topic have been circulating for a long time and the sources are multiplying. What do you want to compete with the PS5, the Xbox Series X|S, the Switch or even the Steam Deck? Nothing is less safe.
Apple eyeing Microsoft’s side for its recruitment?
Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard King should most certainly have everyone many episodes short and long term. Among these we can mention the stimulation of competition and it is for this reason in particular that the name Apple has been circulating again lately when the world of video games is mentioned. During the Xbox Two Podcast, Windows Central reporter Jez Corden returned to the wild rumors about it.
According to him, with the development of its own console, Apple could well enter the very closed circle of video games: these are rumors that circulate a lot and that only recently came back to him. However, he does qualify his statements by insisting that their reliability has yet to be proven, although the extent to which they are increasing suggests something is happening on Apple’s part. But what about this Apple-leaning console? Corden’s information addresses a few specific points.
After the echoes he’s had so far, Apple’s console could be linked to the Metaverse: an area that, surprisingly, Microsoft is also interested in. However, the journalist cannot say whether the Apple console will be geared towards the use of virtual reality. According to him, there is excitement on Tim Cook’s company side, and the company is racking its brains exploring many avenues regarding the model to adopt. Also, the company would have poached engineers working for the Xbox brand to make its project a reality.
Be that as it may, if Apple were to release a console, it would not overshadow PlayStation and Microsoft by trying to release a similar machine: it seems that the American giant is considering a different approach, possibly and exclusively digital. Nothing is official at the moment and as Corden himself said: if the rumors are more present, they still need to be substantiated in good and proper form before they can be confirmed.
