In one of his many chats about handheld devices this year, Xbox’s Phil Spencer offered some thoughts on where the gaming industry will be in 2024. What did you ask him to say? Well, “We’re not going to expand the market with a $1,000 console” definitely doesn’t sound like a shameless attack on some of the more recent and rather expensive consoles.
The Microsoft executive said in an interview with Bloomberg that Xbox’s business has “never been healthier.” You know, after all these layoffs and studio closings, this year has been done. Oh, and he also mentioned the growth in cloud gaming, PC gaming, and console usage.

Spencer said that from a broader perspective, he was “very happy with the direction the industry is going”, explaining that his view was: “In order to attract new players, we need to be creative and Adapt to new business models, new devices, new ways of accessing technology. We’re not going to expand the market with a $1,000 console. “
Yes, expensive consoles aren’t going to expand the market, you know, like the PS5 Pro which isn’t exactly G-priced but is still considered a bit pricey by a lot of people who aren’t part of its primary offering. The target audience is enthusiasts who have basically convinced themselves that the upgrades it promises are worth it.
Spencer also said that while nothing is “imminent,” following last year’s huge deal with Activision Blizzard, Xbox is still considering partnering with another mobile company and/or adding “geographic diversity” (which is a cute (corporate lingo) companies are making more acquisitions. seems to be at the top of the list.
Beyond that, the executive also spoke about Xbox’s mindset when it comes to porting its games to other platforms, refusing to commit to what will happen with the next Halo game, but additionally saying: “I’d love to not have one in our portfolio. See the ‘you can’t’ red line.”
To be honest, I haven’t played it in a while, but I’m pretty sure you can find some crimson text in Pentiment that says something like that, probably in a cool medieval font.
