The classic picture in the console area has been a three-way battle between Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo for many years, but in the future there will be other well-known companies. This also gives Xbox CEO Phil Spencer to think about who, before the release of the new Xbox Series X, wasn't even Sony as its biggest competitor and not Nintendo either.
In an interview with the technology magazine Protocol Spencer also discusses the future of gaming in general. In his view, this is clearly in the cloud, and here there are other competitors to fear. According to him, in the longer term companies like Google or Amazon are likely to become the biggest competitors with their cloud computing capacities.
"When we talk about Nintendo and Sony, we have tons of respect, but in the future we'll see Amazon and Google as the main competitors," said Spencer. "This is not disrespectful to Nintendo and Sony, but traditional game companies are in a worse position […] We have invested billions of dollars in the cloud over the past few years."
And further: "I don't want to fight format wars with them, while Amazon and Google focus on bringing gaming to seven billion people around the world. That is ultimately the goal," said Spencer.
Microsoft tries to arm itself and position itself well with the cloud gaming service Project xCloud; this is currently in a test phase.
