Total video game industry spending fell 15% year over year to $4.9 billion, according to NPD. Hardware, software, mobile devices and accessories all declined, with spending falling 8% to $13.9 billion in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

While the Xbox Series X/S may lead in dollar sales, the Nintendo Switch leads in unit sales, making it the best-selling console of the month.
and software, Elden Ring was the best-selling game in March. Dollar sales increased by double digits compared to when it topped the list in February. The game was the number one selling game on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
The game is currently the best-selling game year-to-date and the second-best-selling game for the 12-month period ending March 2022. Elden Ring is second only to Call of Duty: Pioneer in sales.
Gran Turismo 7 debuted as the second best-selling game of the month, taking second on the PlayStation console. The game set a new all-time release sales record for the Gran Turismo franchise release and was the fourth best-selling game in the first quarter.
On the software charts, Pokemon Legends: Arceus came in second, Horizon Forbidden West took third, followed by Gran Truismo 7 and Call of Duty: Pioneer. The full top 20 chart is shown below, and the top-selling games for each platform can be found at the bottom of the article.
mobile Game sales fell 12% year over year this month, and Google Play games revenue fell nearly 25% during the period, offsetting a less than 1/4 percentage point drop in App Store game spending. Despite the decline, consumer spending on U.S. mobile games fell less than 10% year over year during the quarter.
According to Sensor Tower, the top-grossing mobile games in March were: Candy Crush Saga, Roblox, Coin Master, Garena Free Fire, Genshin Impact, Evony: The King’s Return, Bingo Blitz, Royal Match, and Candy Crush Soda Saga.
Expenditures for March 2022 Accessories Parts spending fell 16% to $592 million in the first quarter, down 23% year over year to $227 million. The Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller was the best-selling accessory in March, and it remains the best-selling accessory so far this year.
