XIII certainly wasn’t a bad shooter at the time, at least not the original. However, the same cannot be said of the remake from Microids. Another remake is set to follow.
Released in 2003 by Ubisoft, the cel-shaded shooter XIII was far from a bad shooter that many fans could find, even if it never became a real hit. In 2019, Microids announced a remake that was developed by PlayMagic for Microids and was so bad when it was rele ased in 2020 that the two studios apologized afterwards.
Absurdly, Microids is now apparently making another attempt to put the embarrassment to rest, this time with a different studio. The revision of the remake has been taking place at the French studio Tower Five (Lornsword: Winter Chronicle) for about a year and is now scheduled for release on September 13th. Of course, owners of the original remake will get the new remake for free as an update.
The revisions include a redesign of the art style, one of the biggest criticisms of the remake, as it is far from the original. Furthermore, the AI will be improved, the HUD revised as well as the sound design. 30 frames per second should be guaranteed on the switch, 60 fps on PS5 and Xbox Series. In addition, there should be a multiplayer for 2-13 players.
It will be interesting to see if XIII really gets a worthy remake and doesn’t end up back on the list of games we refused to play.
