“Yellowstone” officially ends with the second part of the fifth season. The fans’ expectations for the final episodes are certainly high, after all Kevin Costner left the series in the middle of the season, even though he plays the main character John Dutton.
But it’s not just Costner’s exit that raises some unanswered questions. The rest of the Dutton clan also has open feuds, love affairs and more. We have collected for you what still needs to be clarified in the final episodes of the neo-Western series.
The farewell to Kevin Costner
After much back and forth and many arguments, it is clear that Kevin Costner will no longer appear in the second part of “Yellowstone” Season 5. Quite a problem for series creator Taylor Sheridan, because Costner was the main character of the series as John Dutton. An off-screen death certainly doesn’t do him justice, but everything seems to be leading up to that.
Costner is said to have a “moral death clause” in his contract that gives him veto power over scripts and prevents John Dutton from dying a death Costner doesn’t like. So if John Dutton really dies, it will probably be a heroic death.
Of course, it’s also possible that John simply disappears and survives. But that would probably be equally unsatisfactory for the audience. Either way, the series has to find an explanation for the head of the family’s absence. And also who will take over the ranch in his place.
The impeachment of Governor John Dutton
In the finale of part 1 of “Yellowstone” season 5, it became clear that Jamie Dutton wants to remove his father John from his office as governor. And Jamie might very well succeed if he unpacks an old Dutton family secret: the location and purpose of the Yellowstone train station.
If it turns out that the Duttons are killing their enemies there, John’s political career will probably be over very quickly – even if the “train station” outside of Montana is in a legal gray area. It will be particularly exciting to see how this storyline continues without Kevin Costner appearing as John Dutton.
Will the Yellowstone Ranch prophecy from “1883” come true?
In the “Yellowstone” spin-off “1883” there was a prophecy that many fans see as a clue to the end of the series. In the series we see the Duttons settle in Montana in 1883 and purchase the land of the Yellowstone Ranch.
Spotted Eagle, an elder of the Crow tribe, suggests that the family move to Paradise Valley, but the choice comes with a price. “In seven generations my people will rise up and take back the land.” Since Tate Dutton is seventh generation, this could seal the fate of Yellowstone Ranch.
There are many indications that the land will go back to the indigenous people.
The end of Beth and Jamie’s feud
There is little love between siblings Jamie and Beth Dutton. In part 2 of season 5, their feud could finally come to a climax. Since Beth has sided with John and Jamie is acting alone against the entire family, everything is likely to lead to a perhaps even fatal showdown.
Jamie doesn’t shy away from publicly betraying his family and thereby putting the inheritance of the entire Yellowstone Ranch at risk. It remains to be seen which of the two siblings will emerge as the winner in the end.
The meaning of Kayce’s visions
In season 4, Kayce takes part in an indigenous ritual to be accepted as a member of his wife Monica’s tribe. As a result, he has some visions that provide clues to part 2 of the season. In the first vision, Kayce sees a flying owl, seen by many indigenous peoples as a symbol of death. This suggests that Kayce and the Duttons may have at least one major loss ahead.
Another vision is about Kayce’s past and how it still haunts him today, while the third vision suggests betrayal. In the fourth and final vision, Kayce sees a girl in white who makes him choose between two paths: the Duttons or his new life with his wife’s tribe.
Who ultimately owns Yellowstone Ranch?
The battle for Yellowstone Ranch could finally come to an end in Part 2 of Season 5. Tate Dutton is arguably the perfect heir to the ranch. As the son of Kayce Dutton, part of the Dutton clan, and Monica Dutton, who grew up on the reservation, he could reconnect the people of the Broken Rock Reservation with the Duttons after John Dutton has had a long-standing feud with the natives living there .
But the dispute between John and High Chief Thomas Rainwater must come to a conclusion. How this is possible without Kevin Costner remains to be seen.
Jamie Dutton’s Fate
Jamie Dutton is targeting his entire family. He wants to destroy John Dutton’s reputation and even tries to kill his sister Beth. Most likely, Jamie will remain the antagonist in the grand finale of “Yellowstone.” Will he spell the end for the Duttons?
What’s next for Rip and Beth?
Rip and Beth’s relationship is overshadowed by a sad secret that has also brought the hatred between Beth and Jamie to the extreme. Not only did Jamie arrange Beth’s abortion, he also arranged for Beth to be sterilized – without her consenting to it or even knowing it.
Surely in the final episodes, Rip will find out what Jamie did and want revenge for it. It is almost certain that it will ultimately culminate in a big showdown.
This is how the “Yellowstone” finale could prepare the spin-offs
Even though the final episodes of Season 5 of “Yellowstone” will probably answer most of the open storylines, we are sure that various questions will remain unanswered to be clarified in the two new spin-offs. In addition to the existing spin-offs “1883” and “1923”, two brand new series were also ordered: “1944”, which takes place before “Yellowstone” and “2024” (provisional title), which takes place after the main series.
We will certainly see some of the main characters again in “2024”. Matthew McConaughey is also set to star in the film.
