There were previous reports that Crash Bandicoot 5 was in production, and now a new report has revealed more details about the game.

Back in July, a developer who previously worked at Crash Bandicoot 4 developer Toys For Bob claimed that Crash Bandicoot 5 was in the works, though not many details were revealed. They did note that people would hear about the game one day, and that “it’s going to break people’s hearts,” which certainly sounds accurate, because in a new video from Did You Know Gaming’s Liam Robertson, he shared some details about the canceled Crash Bandicoot 5 – the most notable aspect of which was that it would have been a crossover with Crash Bandicoot’s co-star from the PS1, Spyro the Dragon.

Yes, it sounds like you’re about to find some superglue to mend your broken heart, because while there have been some crossovers between Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, they’ve never quite become the classic 3D platformers that their respective games were. The game will reportedly be a direct sequel to Crash Bandicoot 4, with concept art and story details showing off some classic villains as well as some new ones, and will draw on references from the PS2 game Crash Bandicoot Twins.

The game then apparently evolved into a Spyro crossover, where players could play as both characters traveling through each other’s worlds, and there was some teamwork involved. The tone of the game also became darker, and the lore of the game became more important this time around. Ultimately, the game never made it to pre-production, as Activision was reportedly unhappy with Crash 4’s sales due to the popularity of the N. Sane Trilogy remake, and therefore opted to push forward with a live service.

Crash did get a live service game with Crash Team Rumble, but it stopped being updated in less than a year. But live services are definitely not a misleading thing for the gaming industry to pursue!

Whether this means the end of Crash or Spyro is unclear at this time. Toys For Bob is working on a new game, and many are hoping it will be a new Spyro game, but for now you’ll just have to wait and see.
