If you’re one of those House of the Dragon fans who was a little disappointed with the Season 2 finale, it’s probably because the show’s crew saved the big reveal for Season 3.
Not every season finale is going to be a spectacular one, and for some fans, that was the case with House of the Dragon Season 2. I wouldn’t worry too much about the show, as it still has two more seasons (Season 4 being the final one), but it’s understandable if you want to know how a certain scene you were looking forward to will end. Showrunner Ryan Condal recently explained the ending of “The Battle of the Throat,” a highly anticipated scene from the books, during a press conference, and it sounds like the main reason for its absence was budgetary issues.

“One of the challenges of making a television show of any scale is [is] No one has unlimited time and resources,” Condal explained. “When you’re a showrunner, you always have to balance storytelling with the resources you need to tell that story… We wanted to rebalance the storytelling in a way that gives us three great seasons of television.” [after season one] “When you’re trying to stage this show, it takes a lot of resources, buildings, armor, costumes, visual effects… We tried to give The Gullet – arguably the second most anticipated action movie after Fire & Blood – the time and space it deserves.”
It’s a pretty reasonable explanation, even if you’re still a little disappointed that you’ll have to wait (presumably) at least two years to see this anticipated live-action battle. Production on season 3 is set to begin in early 2025, but luckily there are other spinoffs in the works, like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is set to air sometime in 2025.
